Nippy Noodle Restaurant

Just order the cheapest, plainest noodle dish on the menu! That’s what I intend to do next time. Why? Because the noodle here is so good, you don’t really need any extra topping. Seriously. And what do I mean by good? Springy, non-starchy and smooth. It’s a wonder how the repetitious compressing of the dough using a huge bamboo pole can produce such fantastic texture. And I respect the guy who’s commanding the whole compression mechanism by riding the pole between the groin. This must be the next most hazardous job for men after professional cycling! The strands were so fine, I could almost call it the capellini of all egg noodles. No hint of lye as well. The restaurant proclaims that they use omega-3 eggs, which means nothing to me because it’s not about how healthy the eggs are but how the noodle tastes. If salmon or any other omega-3 rich fish is used, then I'll be impressed. Having said that, the noodle was still very much tasty lah. Wish I could say the same about the braised ribs and trio cuts toppings though.

Gotta love the restaurant's perky name too.

With trio of char siew, roasted belly and liver sausage that I could do without.

yeah, sadly we missed the noodle-making process, whereby the staff would saddle on the huge bamboo and gallop away! :)

"...riding the pole between the groin"?
"Saddle on a bamboo and gallop away"??

This I gotta see.... Haha.. :)
(Hmm. Need to find someone with a GPS tho. No idea how to get there..... *ditz*)

Wow. i never knew the existence of this place at all. But then I hardly venture the Old Klang Road area much. Must must must go for some nippy

The texture of the noodles looks good... so "slim", hehehe...

Now I wonder how "cheap" is the noodle? coz' omega-3 eggs are expensive, rite? ;)

I totally agree with you, bro... when the noodles are good enough on their own... Like really good nasi lemak, you can just devour the rice, plate after plate of the stuff... :)

Happy A Happy Makan-filled Weekend!

haha.. i love the way you decribed this!
and I don't mind having just the noodles if they r good enough :) there's one noodle stall in Klang too with GOOD noodles, but not the charsiew or chicken feet. However, it's definitely not NIPPY ;P

joe, haha, ok la, the siew cheong is quite good la, compared to other stuff. worth an order. ;)

j2kfm, ahhhh, saddle! that was the word i was looking for! haha. woah, dude, u seem to eat in this area quite often, hor? kewl.

j, i think they have pics as well. but nothing beats "live" right? haha. it's actually quite easy to find. we can go eat there again sometime! :)

selba, yupe yupe. the strands are really slim, compared to some wanton mee i know. it's relatively cheaper than pasta, that's for sure. my bowl of noodles (the most expensive one) costs about RM10, which is still cheaper than some fast food set meals..hehehe.

qwazymonkey, yesssss, some nippy will do good. :) we can do a food crawl there one day. it's a cluster of makan places there. quite easy to go from federal highway.

jaime-la-nourriture, yeah, i was intrigued by the name before the bamboo! haha. the noodle was definitely one of the best i had in recent memory. :)

backstreetgluttons, ya know, we really think alike lah! at first, i wanted to associate the noodle with beautiful girls without make-up...hehehhee...hi-5!

I've tried Nippy wtm, it is commendable. Then, came along Canto-I(mid-valley), which I can say d wtm (imported fr HK) is Good but sometimes not consistent (bit soggy) during peak hr. Now, I've tried Yummy Duck wtm (also imported fr HK) a couple of times oredi,it is... Good. WTM in fine strands, springy n texture is smooth. Featured in d STAR recently. D siew york is decent too. Unfortunately, d Duck(forgettable),char siew n pork ribs(too sweet) r not too my liking. Jes a stone throw away fr Nippy Noodle ie on d other side of (adjacently opp) Maybank facing d main rd. Yummy Duck add 9, Dynasty Sentral, Jln Kuchai Maju 18,Off jln Kuchai lama,KL. Tel: 79816299
Try it n give ur comment. Cheers!

thanks for the tip, pang. looks like there are lots of hidden gems in that area! i'll go give it a try when i have a chance to go there again! :D i also dont like canton-i's version because it was quite typical. one of the more authentic ones that i like is koon kee at petaling street. but too bad, they seemed to have lost the touch (and used lotsa msg) these days.

pang said...

Koon Kee is an old institution. Those were d days,I luv em. U can try one WTM stall opp TESCO, Puchong ; Rest Fong Lye. Business is v.good, Sat & Sun take Q no: wor! WTM is in fine strands, smooth texture n d char siew is good too. Try 4 urself.

HairyBerry said...

yeah, those days koon kee used to be a good place for WTM. and the sha hor fun opposite rex cinema as well. things have certainly changed (sadly) and i've not been there in years! thanks for the tip on fong lye. i've read about it before. will be interesting to check it out when i'm in the area. ;D

opp Rex or in front of OCBC, d sha hor fun n prawn wantan r yummy.....too :P
It is a pity tat all those "yummy stalls" run by "old man" fr 1st to 2nd generations retired or managed to pass down 2 d nxt generation; their "recipes" just don't work anymore. To me is an easy way out MSG,MSG tat's it....unlike those days, d piping hot, rich n flavourful chicken broth hor fun served under ur nose......miss em... :(

HairyBerry said...

pang, i absolutely agree! it's really all about msg these days. tourists might find it interesting but locals who have been around will know the difference. there's the very good "ju chap" or mixed pork soup near the old kwong yik bank. ahhh, those good old days.

pang said...

yea, d "ju chap teng" wif salted vegi n tofu is still there. helo! Gim me a bowl of hot rice pls....ha ha..FYI, nxt 2 them is d Lou Yau Kee's infamous fish porridge n "ju chap chok" aka mixed pork porridge. They hv just relocated in front of Soong Kee (jes across d road) beef noodle kopitiam. Now, i can hv best of "both worlds." I don't quite like d Soong Kee's wtm; wat i go 4 is d their "loh she fun" aka rat's tail noodle ie chewy in texture n more dense in "rice flavour" unlike d normal loh she fun is jes plain flour n starchy too. They told me they get d supply fr an old man who "home made" loh she fun 4 them. Hv u tried their "con low loh she fun?"

HairyBerry said...

ooooh, i just read about low yau kee from babe in the city's latest post! woah, fried intestines in one stall, braised in another! shiok! i've not tried soong kee because we usually go for lai foong. but i heard the standard dropped as well. i sooo need to revisit!
