Nasi Padang River Valley

Rice With Asam Pedas Gravy

Sambal Belacan

As cliché as it may sound, bliss really does come in the simplest of forms. Like plain white rice eaten with a good gravy, just. And that was all I needed here, that night. Well, not to say that the rest of the dishes were bad, of course. In fact, I find the fried chicken with sweet/spicy sauce and fried fish rather engaging. The squids, I thought, were slightly undercooked though. Clearly, my heart was sold to the combination of rice, asam pedas gravy and sambal belacan. Adequately spicy with a nice touch of sourness (tamarind paste, I presume), appetizing was the best word to describe both the condiments. Loved the tinge of exotic belacan flavour as well.

I am officially hungry, again.

undercooked squids? pity. they look mighty promising though.

truth be told, i'm still a virgin to nasi padang. pathetic. wondering how diff is it to typical M'sian's curry rice.

How come the sambal look like chicken rice chili one? The f'ler borrowed it from Tian Tian issit? LOL

Is this the one sort of across the street from Great World City? If it is then it's YUMZ. It's been years since I last makan there.

@J2Kfm, it's different. Kinda like Indonesian curry rice. It's light and not heavy like Indian curry.

Eh... nasi padang? Indonesian nasi padang? hehehe.... kinda look "fusion" nasi padang to me.

Any performance on how they bring the food to the table?

Dun remind me of Pak Nasir. Aunty River Valley's nasi padang is 100X nicer, and cheaper, with no 'soothing' music. (btw xlb suggested it, ahem)

A certain word you constantly use on me comes to mind when I read this post. A six-letter word starting with F and ending with R, and it's not the obvious word that's at the top of your mind right now.

It's been a while since I had good Malay food. And I miss bergedil. Haven't had one in ages!

The risk of overloading on carbs and developing a whole load of self esteem issues is serious and so so threatening, but the gratification is well worth it... kinda like bungee jumping!

This type of all-in-1 colors and tastes is d Queen in Malaysia and quite like the dark pungent mysterious women we sometimes meet in a flash at da backlanes behind the corner lot at the end of the row, around midnight + 3

j2kfm, yeah, i thought the same too! the sambal was nice though. aiya, not pathetic la. u get to eat much more nasi kandar than me leh. actually, it's not so much different. the interesting part is, they use almost identical ingredients as in Malay cooking, just different combinations, me thinks. come to sg, we go makan!

qwazymonkey, omg tian tian! haha, no lar, tt's saltier (still wonderful, of course). this one's sweeter. u r right! this is the one opposite great world city! woah, u've been to so many good makan places in sg lah. recommend me some la! :)

thanks for the clarification on nasi padang too, dude!

selba, wow, so this is not the authentic style of nasi padang? now i'm intrigued. how fusion is it? i so need an education on nasi padang. performance? haha, no lah. self-service! :) how is the performance like?

sc, wow, lucky u! as i know, it's quite rare to find nasi padang in kl. hv u blogged abt it before ar? dekat mana tu? nak pergi cuba lah! :)

keropok man, looks like we've got another list of makan places lined up for us hor? woohoo!!! maybe we shd combine this with the lechon thingy. two extremes!

xiu long bao, omg, the soothing music!!! yeah, i hafta agree that the food here caters more to our tastebuds la. ya lar, ya lar, u suggested the place. but u must remember who suggested to go to zion road first hor.

kenny, u must take good care of yrself, dude! spicy and hot food (and coffee) can wait. in fact, things like soup noodles and tea can be very nice too! and your fave, dim sums...hehehe

bangsar-babe, i just had my fix of nasi padang last weekend! hehehe...i am reminded of the nasi briyani in putrajaya that u blogged about lah. now i want that too..haha

550ml jar of faith, take the plunge and dont look back! when it's good, it's worth risking everything, including carb related self esteem issues. for that, i am shameless...join me!!! :)

ladyironchef, yerrrrr, u all know me too well! hahaha! will try to be different (by eating less) this saturday! haha!

backstreetgluttons, gam, banjir, basah, etc...we love them all. the taste, the colour, the smell...it's a good life. now, we must make room for a "rice field" but unfortunately, not +3...sigh...

cumi & ciki, good to hear from ya! ooohh, good point. in that case, human brains should be tasty as well cos the fat content is the high! ok, i dont intend to try that but i know someone might..hahah!

thenomadgourmand, the asam pedas gravy and sambal belacan rawked! hey, come next time, we go makan here ya!

mimi, actually, the sambal was not very spicy. i thought it was too, at first. a relief, cos i usually sweat crazy if it's too spicy...haha
